The Challenge

KNP Technologies faced challenges with their existing setup of storing images on AWS EBS volumes. Global users experienced slow and inconsistent download speeds, negatively impacting performance. Additionally, the high cost of EBS storage was unsustainable as data volumes increased. The setup lacked scalability and efficiency to support the growing user base and data requirements. KNP Technologies needed a cost-effective, scalable solution to enhance global performance and ensure secure access to their image files.

Discovery

We initiated the project by conducting comprehensive discovery sessions with KNP Technologies. These sessions served as the foundation for the project and allowed us to:

  • Gain a detailed understanding of KNP Technologies’ existing image storage setup on AWS EBS volumes.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and the underlying causes of high storage costs.
  • Understand KNP’s specific requirements for scalability, performance optimization, and cost reduction.
  • Review and validate the current infrastructure design using the five pillars of the AWS Well-Architected Framework to identify gaps and areas for improvement.

The insights gathered during this phase were compiled into a Gap Analysis Report, along with a proposed Remediation Plan to address the identified challenges and optimize their image storage and delivery architecture.

Onboarding

With the project parameters and remediation plan finalized, we proceeded with the onboarding process for KNP Technologies, which included:

  • Migrating Data to Amazon S3:
    Transferred all image data from AWS EBS volumes to Amazon S3, ensuring minimal downtime and data integrity during the migration process.
  • Configuring Amazon S3 and CloudFront:
    Set up Amazon S3 with versioning and lifecycle policies for optimized storage management. Integrated AWS CloudFront to enable faster and more efficient delivery of image files globally.
  • Implementing Access and Security Controls:
    Configured AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies to restrict direct access to S3 and implemented signed URLs in CloudFront for secure, time-limited access to image files.
  • Workshops and Training:
    Conducted sessions with the KNP Technologies team to ensure familiarity with the new architecture, including managing S3 and CloudFront configurations, understanding performance metrics, and utilizing best practices for security and scalability.

This onboarding process ensured a seamless transition to the new system, empowering KNP Technologies to optimize their image storage and delivery. It also provided the scalability, cost-efficiency, and performance improvements necessary to support their growing business requirements and enhance the end-user experience.

Operations & Support

To ensure the long-term success of the project, we provided ongoing operational support and maintenance for KNP Technologies as part of their business-as-usual (BAU) operations. This included:

  • Monitoring and Alerts: Configured tools like Amazon CloudWatch to monitor S3 usage and CloudFront performance with proactive alerting.
  • Change Management: Assisted with infrastructure updates, such as modifying S3 policies or CloudFront settings.
  • Incident Handling: Provided quick resolution for issues like performance slowdowns or access errors.
  • Optimization Updates: Regularly reviewed configurations to ensure the system remained efficient, secure, and scalable.

These support services allowed KNP Technologies to focus on their core business while maintaining a reliable and optimized cloud environment.

Optimisation & Advisory

Our team provided consultative services to KNP Technologies as a Cloud Subject Matter Expert (SME), ensuring their cloud environment remained cost-efficient, scalable, and high-performing. Key services included:

  • Usage and Cost Analysis: Tracking and analyzing platform usage to identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Right-Sizing Opportunities: Recommending adjustments to S3 storage tiers and CloudFront configurations based on usage patterns.
  • Architectural Improvements: Suggesting design enhancements to improve performance and reduce operational costs.
  • Service Recommendations: Advising on new AWS services and third-party tools to enhance efficiency and throughput.
